SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal regulatory group voted Thursday to officially close king salmon fishing season along much of the West Coast after near-record low numbers of the fish, also known as chinook, returned to California’s rivers last year. The Pacific Fishery Management Council approved the closure of the 2023 season for all commercial and most recreational chinook fishing along the coast from Cape Falcon in northern Oregon to the California-Mexico border. Limited recreational salmon fishing will be allowed off southern Oregon in the fall.“The forecasts for Chinook returning to California rivers this year are near record lows,” Council Chair Marc Gorelnik said after the vote in a news release. “The poor conditions in the freshwater environment that contributed to these low forecasted returns are unfortunately not something that the Council can, or has authority to, control.”Biologists say the chinook salmon population has declined dramatically after years of drought. ...

Project Connect leaders break down 5 light rail options, future buildout opportunities

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:26:00 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- After Project Connect leaders debuted five reduced light rail scope options last month, officials spoke Thursday on how the system will be built out in the future. The two-hour community meeting featured engagement opportunities between the public and program leadership. Some questions from the public highlighted concerns with the narrowed vision behind the light rail scope -- initially presented to voters as two light rail lines, the Blue and Orange lines.Thursday evening, officials said the decisions to come this June won't encompass the totality of all future light rail in Austin; rather, they called it the jumping off point for future buildout. Each of the five options will incorporate opportunities for future connections north, south and east, they added."It will allow us to build out the full vision that you also voted for over time. That's the plan," said Peter Mullan, executive vice president of architecture and urban design for the project. "What we're talkin...

PITTSBURGH — Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins kept pace in the race for one of the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. The Penguins bounced back from a miserable performance in a loss to New Jersey on Tuesday by putting together three complete periods, a rarity for most of the last three months.Kris Letang beat Marc-Andre Fleury, a good friend who won three Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh before leaving in the 2017 expansion draft, over the glove in the first period for his 11th goal of the season. Rickard Rakell, Jason Zucker and Jeff Carter also scored for the Penguins, who are trying to extend their playoff streak to 17 straight years.Fleury is already assured of a 17th consecutive trip to the postseason after the Wild wrapped up a spot earlier this week. Minnesota’s bid to chase down first-place Colorado in the Central Division took a hit when the Wild struggled to generate much in traf...

The stage was set — on three separate occasions — Thursday afternoon at CHS Field for a player labeled to be part of the Twins’ future to emerge as the hero in the Saints’ home opener.Never mind that the Saints were playing before a spattering of fans on a 36-degree day, all eyes locally are on the lookout for the player who will take the first step toward making it across the river with the Twins. So a wild 12-11 loss to the Iowa Cubs stung on more than one level.Getting first crack was right-handed pitcher Bailey Ober (0-1), who was in the mix to make the Twins out of spring training. Ober surrendered a two-run homer in the first inning but responded by striking out the next four batters. He left the game with two outs in the third after the third of his three walks in the inning forced in a run to tie the score 3-3. Cap-and-invest in NYS budget

ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- The budget is now five days late and lawmakers are still in negotiations. The Department of Environmental Conservation says the Cap and Invest program continues to be a  discussion. The program would make polluters pay for the amount of greenhouse gas emissions they’re putting in the atmosphere. Conor Bambrick, Policy Director at Environmental Advocates New York, said the Climate Action Council came up with this plan. "So they would cap the amount of pollution at a certain level, so we’re talking about the power producing sector, we're talking about transportation, we’re talking about industry and buildings, cap that and force the polluters to pay for every ton of greenhouse gas emissions that they are producing below that cap, below and up to that cap," said Bambrick. Governor Hochul plans for NYS to invest more in Green Energy But if a company goes over that cap, they pay more. The goal is to incentivize industries to reduce pollution and produce revenue...

During the best drinking holiday on the Colorado sports calendar, the last call for alcohol came early at Coors Field. Not that anybody was complaining, because our gritty little Rockies won. They beat Washington 1-0 Thursday afternoon at the home opener when revelers traditionally gather in LoDo to celebrate the arrival of spring and drink to forget the bad baseball we’re usually stuck with in this dusty old cowtown. While baseball has long been Denver’s favorite drinking game, this home opener was a celebration of something far more refined and rare: beautiful pitching. This masterpiece was memorable because it was created by Kyle Freeland and Pierce Johnson, two Rockies pitchers born and raised in Colorado.“The beauty about the day is you can talk about a Colorado starter and a Colorado closer. Isn’t that cool?” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “It was super great for me to see a bookend of Kyle and Pierce on opening day, and what it means to our fans and our team and our stat...
